"Doing Our Part From The Heart" is an annual military community drive that was established in 2007 by Louisville Metro Council Member Madonna Flood and her assistant Andrea Derouen. Madonna Flood's son, Brandon Sword, was a Sergeant in the military when he became injured and was honorably discharged. Brandon's friend, Sergeant Chris Brevard, was killed during combat. Madonna and Andrea's heart and passion for those fighting overseas became the inspiration for "Doing Our Part From The Heart."
The annual community drive collects simple everyday items that most people don't realize may be hard for service people to obtain. These items include gum, deodorant, toothpaste, lotion, eye drops, bug repellant, hand sanitizer, peanut butter, neosporin, sun block, tylenol, etc...
There is now a "Zero Dollar Store" established overseas. The items that are collected are shipped and shelved at the store, allowing soldiers to attain exactly what they need...for FREE.
In December 2009, Madonna Flood approached Matthew Hodge about composing a theme song for "Doing Our Part From The Heart." Matthew Hodge wrote a song entitled "A Hero Always Lives" which was performed by the Campbellsville University Chamber Choir and recorded in Buzz Cason's "Creative Workshop Studio" in Nashville. A slideshow video presentation of the song was created by Matthew Hodge and uploaded onto Youtube.
The song "A Hero Always Lives" has been recognized and honored by the Kentucky Senate, the Kentucky House of Representatives, Metro Council of Louisville, WHAS11 News, and Radio Disney.
